Honeydew crispy shrimp at Z&Y Peking Duck
Z&Y Peking Duck is known for, well, its duck — it’s right there in the name — and while I’d always quickly point diners in that direction if they’re asking what to order here, I’m also here to spread the gospel of its other dishes. On a visit last year, our dining group barely made it past the slices of roast duck and Szechuan poached fish on the menu, but on a recent return, I found myself enthralled with this honeydew crispy shrimp. The shrimp are halved through the top and fried, shell and all until it reaches this admirable, shattery-crisp texture. Tossed in a sauce that gives each piece some zing, the fried shell holds up against the flavors and delivers a bite that allows one to chomp straight through the shrimp with cronchy aplomb. If you’re looking for other bites to order, don’t skip an order of the Beijing pot stickers for the table, it’ll disappear in a flash. Z&Y Peking Duck, 606 Jackson Street, San Francisco
